Welcome to the exciting world of postgraduate study at the University of York’s Department of Biology! Are you prepared for an inside look at what makes undergraduate and graduate courses so different from one other? Get ready to learn what makes the York Bio postgraduate experience so exciting and life-changing.
Fewer modules, more depth
Undergraduate:
In our undergraduate studies, we manage multiple modules, receiving a broad education. We delve into various subjects, navigating exams, coursework, and group projects.
Postgraduate:
While undergraduates may be accustomed to juggling multiple modules, postgraduate students at York find themselves diving deep into fewer subjects. Students are able to get a deep grasp of their chosen topic as the emphasis moves from breadth to depth. And the most interesting part? Well, that’s got to be the lab experience!
Self-study intensity
Undergraduate:
Our education is more regulated during our undergraduate years, mostly through coursework. This structured approach helps in the development of a solid foundation by methodically introducing important ideas, testing our comprehension with assessments, and encouraging teamwork through group projects.
Postgraduate:
As Masters students, we’re right in the heart of a self-learning adventure. A significant shift from the more structured days of undergrad. The difficulty and attraction of our academic careers lie in our ability to independently navigate through a large number of papers. Although moving toward independent research has its challenges, it’s essential for comprehending the subject we are studying.
Student’s insight
“If I had to pick a favourite module or activity, it would definitely have to be the group works and combined classes with students from other courses. It presents an opportunity to interact with a larger group while sharing ideas and learning new skills together. A real learning atmosphere along with a true sense of community of like-minded people has always been a thriving environment for me, and I am glad I can experience that here.”

Lab experience for all
Undergraduate:
Lab experiences in our undergraduate studies might be limited, with not every module offering hands-on exposure.
PGT:
One remarkable aspect that sets the University of York apart is its commitment to providing hands-on lab experience for all postgraduate students, regardless of their previous background. Join us as we enter the laboratories, where seasoned researchers mentor novices to ensure that we all focus on the real-world applications of their findings. It’s about creating a cooperative and encouraging community while learning, not simply about learning.
As we wrap up our behind-the-scenes exploration, it becomes evident that postgraduate study at the University of York’s Biology Department is more than an academic pursuit. It’s a journey of self-discovery, collaboration, and hands-on exploration that shapes us into professionals of tomorrow.
