When I first arrived at the University of York, I didn’t expect to be surrounded by so much art! But as it turns out, art is everywhere you look on campus. Whether it’s in a gallery, outdoors, or even part of the buildings themselves. In this post, I’ll share some of my favourite artistic spots and projects that make this place feel so creative.
Norman Rea Gallery – The Heart of Student Art
The Norman Rea Gallery is one of the highlights for any art lover on campus. It’s the only student-run gallery in the UK, located in Derwent College. The gallery was established back in 1976 and has been offering students a space to engage with art ever since.
They hold multiple exhibitions throughout the year, featuring a mix of emerging artists — both students and professionals — and exciting themes. Last year, my favourite exhibition was The Grand Finale: Art of the Extravaganza, but that’s just one example of the brilliant shows they put on. The gallery doesn’t just display art; it creates conversations around contemporary issues, bringing together students from different backgrounds. They also host a variety of events, some in collaboration with other societies, making it a lively hub for student creativity. If you love art or are curious to see what your fellow students are creating, I definitely recommend stopping by.
The University’s Art Collection – Hidden Gems Everywhere
Did you know the University of York holds an impressive art collection of over 900 works? Some are from well-known British artists like Barbara Hepworth and Sidney Nolan, and others from talented local artists. What’s great is that many of these artworks are displayed around campus, so you can stumble upon them as you go about your day. My favourite spot to admire some of these pieces is in the History of Art Department Reception.
Moreover, each year Curating and History of Art students put on an exhibition using works from the University’s collection. These exhibitions are always thoughtfully curated and give a glimpse into the diverse artistic voices represented in the collection.
Sculpture Trail – Art in the Outdoors
If you’re someone who enjoys being outdoors (or just taking long walks between lectures), then the sculpture trail on campus is a must-see. There are fifteen sculptures dotted around the grounds, with some surprising you in unexpected places, turning a casual walk into an art discovery. From large modern sculptures to hidden pieces, the trail offers a lovely blend of art and nature. For example, the concrete panels in Derwent College, designed by Fred Millett, are built into the architecture itself, transforming the whole college into a work of art.
In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to enjoy art casually while taking a break from studying. You never know what you might find next and you don’t need to be an art expert to appreciate the variety of styles and materials.
Art Everywhere – Pop-Up Projects and Exhibitions
Art at York is always evolving. You’ll find plenty of pop-up exhibitions and outdoor displays happening all year round, from student-led projects to collaborations with professional artists. These displays appear in unexpected places, often transforming familiar spaces on campus into vibrant art experiences. The beauty of these pop-ups is how they bring fresh perspectives to campus life, keeping the environment lively and engaging. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just passing by, there’s always something new to see.
The University of York’s campus is full of artistic surprises waiting to be discovered and if you’re an art lover, you’ll feel right at home here. So next time you’re walking to a lecture or grabbing a coffee, take a moment to look around. You might just discover something incredible!
