Hello my name is Mollie, I’m a 3rd year midwifery student. Welcome to my Health Sciences building tour. Let me show you around our campus facilities. Also known as the Seebohm Rowntree building, as student midwives this is where we have most of our lectures. Sometimes lectures can be elsewhere but it’s usually nearby and we end up going as a group so we don’t get lost!
Lectures
We often have our lectures in rooms like these. They’re actually seminar rooms but with our small cohort sizes we can fit in rooms like this! It means our lectures are very interactive and we can ask questions easily. We often put the chairs into small circles from group work or just migrate to the floor! We spend a lot of time together, with our lecture days will usually be 9am until 4pm, 3 or 4 days a week.
On rare occasions we use the lecture theatres down the corridor usually for cross cohort events where we get all three cohorts together, such as during Refreshers Week for study days or guest speakers. As well as for our Elective Presentations Day where the 3rd years present all about their exciting elective placements they did in the summer!
Clinical Simulation Unit
Down the corridor is our clinical simulation unit (CSU). In here we practice all our clinical skills before going onto placement to do it in real life. In first year we started with basic skills such as venepuncture (blood taking) and manual blood pressures, all the way on to cannulation and suturing now as third years! We always do our sessions in here in our uniform and our lecturers wear scrubs (it makes it feel even more real!). Time is the CSU is usually the highlight of our weeks, it’s such a nice session to practice our skills together as a cohort.
Here’s an example of some of the equipment we use, all of this helps us practice in a safe environment where we can make mistakes. Our lovely clinical skills teacher has also started doing drop-in skills sessions which have been great for practicing specific skills we feel we’d like a bit more practice on.
The Cafe
We also have a cafe in our the building – The Kitchen at Alcuin. They have lots of hot/cold drinks and food to choose from, somewhere we frequent on our breaks from lectures. It’s a bit of a sun trap on a nice day so a lovely spot to sit. As well as the benches outside only on a warm day though! There are also a number of other spots a short walk from our building like the library cafe and Nisa (the little supermarket).
This is where we spend about half our time while at university so you’ll be become very familiar with it! The other half of our time is spent in clinical practice either in the hospitals or in the community areas. We cover three trusts, Harrogate, York & Scarborough and South Tees and we go to at least two of these so you’ll become very familiar with these too! I hope you enjoyed this tour, you can come and explore on any of our open days! See you there
