Hi, I’m Esther, a 2nd year law student who enjoys exploring York as a break from my reading! When I’m not buried in cases and notes, you’ll probably find me wandering around campus, taking photos, or looking for peaceful corners of the city to clear my head.

Between classes, my daily routine, and the quiet rush of everyday responsibilities, I sometimes forget to take a moment to slow down.
Over time, though, I’ve found myself collecting little moments of stillness, scenes that help me pause and breathe a little deeper.
Swans on still water

One of my favourite peaceful moments was by the lake, watching two swans drift slowly across the surface. They moved with such ease that the whole scene might have taken place in a softer world.
The sun’s rays struck the water with just the right gentleness, sending shimmering ripples around them. I stayed there longer than I planned, and the quiet just slowly sank into me. Even in a city as naturally calming as York, it’s times like these that truly put me in mind of how calming nature can be.
Evening light on the Minster
Another moment of calm seems to come in the early evenings, especially when I walk toward the Minster. I captured a photo where the Minster glowed among the old buildings and fresh green trees. There were a few cars passing by and a few people, but somehow that view was unexpectedly peaceful.

York has this quiet magic where the light softens everything, and suddenly I feel no urgency, just the comfort of being exactly where I am.
Pastel skies at dusk

Then there are the sunsets that paint the city in soft pinks and blues.
One evening, the sky stretched above the rooftops, and from a higher viewpoint, the tall chimney rose above the neighbourhood. The whole city was wrapped in a gentle hush.
York may not be hectic, but there is something special about watching the city settle into the evening. It’s the kind of moment that makes me pause instinctively, just to take it in.
What these moments mean to me
These photos capture more than images; they are reminders for me to be present. Each moment, whether it’s swans gliding on water, the Minster in golden evening light, or pastel skies above the city, reflects how pausing allows me to reconnect with myself and find balance after busy days.
Being in York shows me that slowing down isn’t about the city’s pace but about recognising moments of stillness. In the rhythm of quiet routines and daily tasks, these simple experiences are what make me feel present and at home.
