Hi, I’m Jack and I am a current first year undergraduate at the University of York studying Criminology. I have been in 2 accommodations during my first year, one being Halifax ( with no weekly meals) and David Kato ( with weekly meals). Here is my experience in accommodation with a weekly free meal.
David kato college is based on Campus East with a beautiful hub with social seating and pool/table tennis tables. But these are not the only things included with your stay at David Kato making it a great social setting; but you have 1 weekly free meal at the Piazza building just minutes away from your room.
What are weekly college meals?
The weekly meals not only allow us to enjoy a lovely feast for free ( very student friendly if you ask me!) but also offer chances to dive into a social situation away from class, societies and socials. Personally, the move from campuses and accommodation affected my friendship circle much bigger than I thought, I went from living in a house full of friends and close by to others i had made, to living on a campus where I knew no one. Getting to know my new flatmates was hard at first, but when they told me about the weekly meal and invited me ( as the newbie) to the meals, it was an incredibly warm welcome.
We chattered about our choices in meals that we all chose, they gave me tips on the best days to use our free meal; following this , the next week we went with another friendly flat in the block opposite us and around 10-12 of us all sat chattering, laughing and most importantly, feasting on a lovely free meal. With these weekly meals you do not need to worry if your a picky eater or you won’t find anything you like as they have a wide variety of options each day, on top of this the menu changes each week! For me my personal favourite meal I have had at the weekly college meals was the chicken with pepper corn sauce with a side of chips and for dessert a chocolate orange crossaint.
Shared kitchen
The shared kitchens in David Kato are exceptionally large with social seating all around the kitchen, this is great for sharing meals, having parties, having friends over or even just to sit whilst you wait for your food to cook. Due to its size it makes it easy for more than one person to cook or be in the kitchen at the same time, and as silly as it sounds; this is a small but very effective way of socialising, at least it had been for me. Talking to your flatmates whilst the oven is on, even for those mere minutes, each day adds up and you really create a bond, like I have with a number of people here in David Kato accommodation.
Tips for new students
Do not be scared to go out of your way to make little gestures, “hello’s”, asking to play pool with other people, these things really stick, and if you get in the habit of doing it often, you may start to build friendships from such small gestures.
Thank you for reading and I hope this has given you some insight into your stay at David Kato ( or any of the other weekly college meal colleges ), and I wish you the best of luck with your university journey!
