University can be expensive. But a bit of planning, research, and a variety of support for students can make student living in York more affordable.
Here are my top tips for making your money go further.
Maia, BA (Hons) English/Politics
Accommodation
Often your biggest expense! With so many options on campus, I’d say think about what’s essential and where you can compromise. Sharing a bathroom, cooking for yourself, and looking for shorter let lengths can all help keep costs down.
Free activities
York is a bustling city packed with history, green spaces, pop-up festivals and street entertainment, constantly giving you new things to do that don’t break the bank.
Some of my favourite free activities include picnicking in Museum Gardens, walking the city walls, or visiting the Minster (free for York residents). Other free attractions include the National Railway Museum, and Shambles Market.
Getting around
We live in a very walkable city, so getting around is easy and cost-efficient! Free buses run between Campus East and West, and discounted ticket deals are often available.
If you fancy a trip out, Leeds, Knaresborough and Harrogate are fantastic options by bus or train. A real highlight is the river boats at Knaresborough, perfect for a scenic row under the viaduct.

Student life
At York, you’ll join one of 11 colleges, which all offer free and fun events throughout the year.
There’s also over 200 societies, which can be a free or low-cost way to experience new interests and friendships. I loved attending weekly LitSoc meetings and joining their free bookshop crawls – I also enjoyed StylesSoc’s free painting and quiz nights!

Working while studying
There are opportunities for part-time employment at the University tailored to students, which are more flexible and understanding around your studies.
These include working in the Students’ Union venues, or becoming a student ambassador. I loved this role: it fit around my schedule and was so rewarding to help future students.
Food
‘Budget-friendly student meals’ might conjure images of pot noodles and baked beans, but this doesn’t have to be your fate! VisitYork and UniDays share the latest student deals so you can enjoy York’s great foodie spots.
Aldi and Lidl are easy to reach from campus, and planning meals or batch-cooking can really help you save.
The Students’ Union offers Fruit & Root for free healthy items, plus Student Pantry for essential non-food supplies.

Financial support
York offers a number of financial support schemes, including bursaries, scholarships and emergency loans. The Student Support Team can help you navigate what’s available. You can arrange one to one sessions and receive tailored advice!
