One of my favourite ways to unwind after lectures or a busy week of research is settling down with a coffee – either with friends or with a good book. The best part is that enjoying York’s café scene doesn’t have to be expensive. Whether you’re looking for a cosy study spot, somewhere to chat, or simply a great coffee at a reasonable price, York has plenty of budget‑friendly options.
Caffè Nero

Caffè Nero remains one of my go‑to choices for affordable coffee. Students can verify their university email in the app to receive a discount on the menu, making most drinks sit comfortably around the £3 mark. The app also works as a digital stamp card, so every tenth drink is free – ideal if you’re a regular.

Waterstones Café
The upstairs café in Waterstones is a lovely, bookish escape in the city centre. Although slightly pricier than the chains, it offers excellent coffee, sweet treats, and a peaceful view over Coney Street. The booth seating is perfect for catching up with a friend. A bonus: if you buy their Book of the Month downstairs, you’ll receive a free coffee voucher to use in the café.

Explore Library Café
Located beside Museum Gardens, Explore Library’s café is a welcoming and affordable spot for studying or meeting friends. The menu is varied and reasonably priced, and it’s easy to pair your visit with a stroll through the gardens or a browse of the library’s shelves.
Fossgate Tap

A slightly unexpected but brilliant option is Fossgate Tap. Although known primarily as a pub, it serves reasonably priced coffee in a relaxed, atmospheric setting. Sitting upstairs gives you a great view over Whip‑Ma‑Whop‑Ma‑Gate – perfect for people‑watching while you study or unwind.

Black Sheep Coffee
Black Sheep Coffee offers a wide range of drinks, from matcha to creative energy‑drink infusions, all in a stylish, modern space. Their best deal is £2 coffee on Mondays for students, with a student discount available on other days. It’s a great choice if you enjoy something a little different.
Topping & Company Booksellers
Toppings, one of York’s newer bookshops, has quickly become a favourite among students. They offer complimentary tea and coffee to anyone browsing the shelves, making it a cosy and cost‑free way to enjoy a warm drink while exploring their beautiful store near the Minster.
Tips for finding affordable coffee
York has a fantastic range of cafés, many of which offer student discounts – so it’s always worth asking. Don’t overlook pubs and bars either; many now open earlier in the day and offer quieter spaces and unexpected deals.
Coffee on campus
If you spend a lot of time on campus, the University’s Eat and Drink Loyalty Scheme is a great way to save money. Through the MyUoY app, you can scan your digital loyalty barcode at participating University‑managed catering outlets to earn points on eligible purchases. Every 100 points adds £1 credit to your account, which you can redeem on future food or drink. It’s a simple way to save if you regularly grab coffee between lectures. (Note: the scheme doesn’t apply to Students’ Union venues.)
If you’re eligible, keep an eye out for seasonal promotions or special offers throughout the year, as campus cafés often run deals.
Why coffee catch‑ups matter
For me, coffee isn’t just about the caffeine. It’s a chance to pause, reconnect with friends, and explore different parts of York. As a postgraduate student, it’s easy to become absorbed in research, so taking time for a coffee break helps me maintain a healthier balance.
Exploring new cafés has also helped me feel more connected to the city – each neighbourhood has its own character, and discovering new spots has become one of my favourite parts of studying here.
If you’re joining the University of York, I’d definitely recommend exploring both the city and campus cafés. With a little planning and a few loyalty rewards, you can enjoy great coffee, save money, and make the most of student life.
