Got an idea for an article for The Conversation? Want to communicate your research to a wider audience?
Commissioning Editor for The Conversation, Holly Squire, is running writing workshops for would-be contributors to the site:
- 27 November 2019, 1pm until 4pm, SLB/003 (Arts and Humanities)
- 5 December 2019, 10am until 1pm, SLB/102 (Sciences)
Hi Christine. I cannot make the workshops, but can you advise what the criteria are for The Conversation? I am not so concerned about content per se, but with issues such as word count, referencing style and number of references. Thanks.
Thanks, Douglas. The word count is around 600-800 words, though there is also a long-read section of around 3,000 words. I don’t believe there is a limit on number of references, though the guidelines say that references should be online so they can be linked to.
It’s worth noting not to just go ahead and write a full piece before getting in touch with The Conversation, as they like contributors to make a pitch first so that ideas can be developed together. See: https://theconversation.com/uk/pitches.
Sheila Perry in Marketing would also be very happy to help you develop your ideas: email sheila.perry@york.ac.uk.
I’m hoping to put a short guide together for the Graduate School public engagement web pages soon: https://www.york.ac.uk/research/graduate-school/public-engagement/.
Hope that helps!
Christine
