Getting started with the British Library

What is the British Library? What’s in the collection? How can I find what I need?

Join the British Library online on Monday 28 October for the first 2024 Doctoral Open Day where you’ll get an introduction to the Library, an overview of the extensive collections, and practical tips for how to use the catalogues and navigate the digital resources. It’s highly recommended for PhD researchers of all disciplines and subject areas.

Book your place

Once you have picked up the basics with the introductory webinar, you’ll be able to choose from a range of other Doctoral Open Days, each introducing an area of the collection so you can focus on what will be relevant to you. If your research spans multiple collections, please feel free to attend more than one. You’ll be able to meet the curators, see objects from the collections, and learn more about careers in the sector. If you’re unsure which Open Day would be most suitable for your research, feel free to get in touch at pgr@bl.uk.

In-person Doctoral Open Days will be taking place at St Pancras on the following days:
31/01/25 British and European Collections: From Antiquity to 1800
14/02/25 Global Languages, Cultures and Societies
14/03/25 Post-1800 and Contemporary British Society and Culture
