Why I became a PGR Buddy – Yoana Almog Sade

Hi Everyone,

I am Yoana, a PhD student in Politics, International Relations, and Environment. I became a PGR Buddy volunteer in 2023, and I would love to share what it is all about.

As a PGR Buddy, you will be there to support new students, both academically and socially. You will guide them through university resources, research practices, and administrative stuff, basically being the go-to person for any questions or concerns. You will help tackle any issues they might have or point them in the right direction for more help. Plus, you will play a big part in helping them feel welcome and part of the academic community.

Based on my experience, here are some of the best parts about being a Buddy:

  1. Personal Growth and Leadership: Being a PGR Buddy helps you build leadership and interpersonal skills, which are super valuable in both academia and beyond.
  2. Networking: You will connect with new students and staff, expanding your academic and professional network.
  3. Community Building: By volunteering, you are helping to create a supportive and inclusive environment. Welcoming new students and helping them settle in fosters a sense of community that makes the experience better for everyone.
  4. Personal Fulfilment: There is something really rewarding about helping new students navigate the challenges of postgraduate research.
  5. Boosting Your CV: It is a great addition to your resume. It shows that you are committed to helping others, can manage responsibilities, and are actively involved in the academic community.

Being a PGR Buddy is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference for new postgrad students. It is a chance to give back to your academic community, develop valuable skills, and grow your network.

Thanks for reading!

Cheers,
Yoana.
