If you want to secure a graduate job at a top company, a placement can help you stand out.
My placement was at Unilever, which is a large multinational ‘Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ (FMCG) corporation. It owns brands such as Magnum, Lynx, Ben & Jerry’s and Simple. I had two 6 month roles: one as a project process analyst and another as a demand planner for PG Tips.
I enjoyed having responsibility to lead projects which had a tangible impact on the business. It was also great to experience working a job full time and working in two great teams of people.
Self-development
I started my placement year confidently, but a skill that I really refined is speaking to people of varying ages and backgrounds. This can be tough at first, but when you start to find common ground it gets much easier!
The main thing I learned is that it’s okay to ask for help. No one will think any less of you for doing so, especially if the company has a collaborative culture.
My most memorable moment was my end of year presentation. It was a great opportunity to showcase everything I’d been working on for the year to managers and directors.
Career insight
Doing a placement gives you a great insight in to what you do and don’t enjoy about working and where your real interests lie. It’s a great asset for choosing your career and helps you find a grad role that’s suited to you.
