My name is Zoe and I am a Second Year Sociology and Criminology student from Essex. I am currently enjoying every aspect of living and studying in York and I am very glad I chose to attend this university.
Not only have I made great friends, but I am able to study things I genuinely have an interest in. The staff in Sociology are very approachable and are always willing to support every student. I feel like being apart of such a wonderful community has definitely contributed to my amazing time at university.
I’ve made a vlog about 3 things to look forward to about Sociology at York whilst showing you the actual buildings where you will be studying.
I hope you enjoy and find it helpful and interesting!

Very nice to see a black student represented here and that you seem to be enjoying York.
I will like to hear about being a black student at young. As a black parent many of us din’t Want to send our teens to York, though it sounds like an excellent university on paper as we don’t want them discriminated against and feeling like an outsider. Perhaps this perception has changed? I’d like to know. Thank you.

Hiya,
Thank you so much for reaching out!
It was definitely a big culture shock but the majority of people here were very friendly. To be honest, I did feel a bit isolated at first but I joined the African Caribbean Society and Nigerian Society and being apart of these societies felt like a home away from home.
Overall, I am loving the whole university experience at York and although it may not be as diverse as other universities I have really enjoyed myself so far and I am very glad I came here.
If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to reach out!
