Clearing can be a nerve-racking experience for anyone. International student, Ginga, talks about his experience with Clearing at York and what it was like on the day.
Why did you choose the University of York through Clearing?
I saw that York had a good reputation as I researched UK universities. I had always wanted to live in the countryside, as I come from a big city in Japan. The city centre and the beautiful green campus made York really stand out from other universities.
What was it like going through Clearing with the University of York?
The Clearing process was fairly easy. The UCAS website explained how to do everything. All I had to do was add my Clearing choices and call them on the phone. I was very nervous about getting accepted. I read many articles about acceptance rates and other people’s experiences beforehand. However, much to my delight, the phone call I had with the York Clearing team was much less complicated than I expected. It was very quick and they gave me an offer on the spot. I really appreciated this because I was so nervous about getting accepted.
What support did the University offer you after you accepted your place through clearing?
I received emails from the University about the next steps to take which covered information about my visa, accommodation, my travel to York and so on. This was very helpful. The only thing was that there were not really many choices left on the accommodation; but I still made great friends in my flat.
How do you feel now you are here?
I’m so glad that I chose York and I feel quite comfortable here now! I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be exposed to a new culture. I’ve met some of my closest friends here.
Did you find it easy to settle into life as a University of York student?
Being in a country I had never been to before was scary at first; however, everything worked out once I made friends. We figured things out together. I consider myself lucky because I get along with everyone in my flat. The campus is also very spacious and peaceful and the city of York is beautiful. It’s easy to settle in to such a wonderful place.
