Hi there! My name is Will and I’m a first-year computer science student at the University of York. Already, there are lots of things about computer science that jump out at me as things to look forward to about York. So, allow me to count them here.
1. The course
First, let’s talk about the actual course itself! Computer science is a subject with a wide variety of different topics to explore. For example, in any given week, you might go from building a simple central processing unit (CPU) in the hardware labs to practicing a new programming language, sketching designs for an interface, or learning some obscure maths thing.
You’re always learning something new and novel. So, if you’re anything like me, this is perfect for keeping your enthusiasm up throughout the course. If you’re worried about feeling overwhelmed, don’t be. The first term is much lighter to ease you in, and the staff are always there to support you if you’re struggling in any way.
2. Meeting other students
Now, for obvious reasons, my first year has involved a little less direct interaction with other students and a few more video calls than is normal. But even taking that into account, I’ve had many opportunities to work together with other students. Teamwork is an important part of computer science. Therefore, you’ll spend a lot of time discussing maths problems and working on group projects, which can be great fun!
You’ll find lots of like-minded people to chat with about whatever it is that most interests you. If you want to take it a step further, you can join one of the many excellent societies. For example, there are a bunch of interesting computer science-related ones including HackSoc (for hackers in the original sense of the word), CyberSoc and DevSoc, the game development society.
There’s also a bunch of non-computer science-related ones for if you’re sick of computers and want to expand your other interests. I recommend AlbumSoc for the weekly listening parties.
3. The campus
There are so many things I could put in this list, but to keep it brief, I’ll make this my last point. If you don’t know, Computer Science is based on the newer Campus East, which is an absolute joy. Campus East is spacious and beautiful, therefore it is a great place to live in first year. Campus West is very nice too, and I enjoy the occasional (free) bus trip over there to visit the library. Also, the different colleges on both campuses organise lots of fun events in collaboration with the University of York Students’ Union (YUSU).
Thanks for reading about my things to look forward to about computer science at York! Best of luck with your time at university!
