Hey everyone, I am excited to take you on a journey through my experience at the University of York, specifically in the incredible MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies program! Buckle up as I answer your questions about my path, my course, and my thrilling campus life.
Choosing my path
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of technology and human experience. So, when it came to picking a course, Human-Centred Interactive Technologies (HCIT) resonated deeply. It promised an innovative blend of design, technology, and understanding how people interact with both.
While considering various universities and course structures, the University of York was the best choice for me. The course at York follows research-informed practice, and covers both practical applications and research methodologies in human-computer interaction.
Their research-driven approach, experienced faculty in HCIT, incredible labs (my jaw dropped when I first toured the department), and focus on practical application aligned perfectly with my goals. Plus, the vibrant student community and historic city sealed the deal!
The HCIT experience (so far):
The MSc in HCIT has been an enriching journey. The modules I have studied so far are Research Methods in Computer Science, Qualitative Approaches to Investigating UX, and Interaction Design and Evaluation. The course structure stands on its promise of research-informed practice, delving deep into quantitative and qualitative research techniques in HCI and understanding user behaviour, design principles and their implementation in interaction design.
The department doesn’t follow the traditional lectures and exams style of teaching, but modules have lectures, practical sessions, seminars, workshops, and further drop-in sessions for support, encouraging students to engage in independent study and collaborative learning.
The University also provides a lot of academic help, from academic reading and writing support to maths and statistics workshops. The university also helps in learning digital skills for individuals and collaboration, improving interpersonal skills like communication. (Use easily accessible online skills guides!)
The biggest challenge? Juggling between assessments and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Time management is key!
The first week! And life beyond lectures
I would be lying if I said it was a smooth transition for me. As an international student from India, I experienced cultural shock and felt homesick. York and the University exceeded my expectations. Apart from being one of the safest cities in the UK, the friendly atmosphere, helpful locals, charming cafes, and cobbled streets in York made me feel at home. My first week was all about understanding the University, its supportive staff, engaging events, and beautiful and peaceful campus (personal advice: spend at least a few hours at The Quiet Place and walk around the campus).
York offers diverse accommodation options, so explore what suits you best! I opted for on-campus accommodation. The University has a collegiate system (similar to houses in the Harry Potter series). Living on campus helped me explore and access study spaces, the library, university cafes, and other facilities at any time of the day.
York’s student life is buzzing! From joining the International Anthology Society as a graphic designer to attending pub quizzes, karaoke nights, college breakfast events, and making connections over coffee, there’s something for everyone. I was also fortunate enough to get selected as an international student ambassador, allowing me to interact with potential students. This experience is amazing!
Career aspirations
I hope to leverage my HCIT knowledge to create accessible and impactful technological solutions. Whether it’s designing websites for diverse audiences or developing assistive technologies, I aspire to make a positive difference. The University’s careers and placements service has been helpful in exploring options and refining my professional goals.
Numerous networking events are organised both online and in person. I leveraged the resources to modify my CV and explore my opportunities on the Handshake platform, the University’s careers platform. I was able to land a remote part-time graphic design job at TheSocialTalks (I am also taking mock interviews with the team to prepare myself for future)
Final thoughts
Living and studying in York has been an amazing experience. The supportive community, stimulating academics, and vibrant city life have all contributed to my growth. If you’re considering HCIT at York, go for it! Embrace the challenges, utilise the resources, and you’ll be well on your way to crafting technology that empowers and inspires.
