Hello!
My name is Sydney Sherman and in this blog, I will be sharing three things to look forward to as a Social Media and Management student at York! As an international student from the States, I have a unique perspective on what it is like to be a student here, and I look forward to sharing that with you!
The International Experience
One of the first things you will notice as a Social Media and Management student is the array of international students from around the world. During one of my first days on campus, for a scavenger hunt within the Department of Sociology, I was grouped with a student from Nigeria, one from Oman, and two from the north and south of China. While there was a bit of a language barrier, it did not stop us from working together to find all the pieces of the puzzle and come in second place in the competition. Following this activity, we remained friends and even decided to work together on a group project later in the semester.
Throughout the semester, there were many opportunities to interact with other international students. Learning about different customs, celebrating new holidays, and eating food that I may not have otherwise tried before. This also was an opportunity for me to share my own customs and culture, even putting on a mini Thanksgiving with my new friends and housemates.
While at times challenging, due to the language and cultural barrier, this has been a unique opportunity for me to interact with people who I may have not interacted with before. I’ve created bonds and friendships that I will cherish for a lifetime.
Incredible Faculty & Staff
The second thing you can look forward to as a Social Media and Management student is the incredible staff within the department. From skills lecturers to seasoned professors, there is no end to the support you will receive.
Whether you have a question about the assessment (of which you will have many) or just need someone to talk to, there is always someone who can help.
During my first examination period, I was incredibly nervous and overwhelmed with the amount of work we had to do. Additionally, as an international student, I had no prior experience with the UK standards of writing, let alone a Masters level paper at a Russell Group University. Thankfully, with the support of my skills lecturer, as well as a few members of the faculty, I was able to get all of my questions answered and feel more comfortable and confident about the work moving forward.
Every day, I am taken aback by the knowledge and dedication that my teachers have, and I look forward to seeing them in both lectures and seminars.
Views & Facilities
Last (but certainly not least) are the views and facilities! As a Social Media and Management student, you will be based out of the Department of Sociology on Campus East. In addition to the scenic views of the lake and ponds, you will have access to a range of facilities, from the Piazza Starbucks to the Department itself.
Campus East offers a variety of places to study and eat and is walking distance to the Greggs, Nisa Local, Papa Johns, and Unity Health – for all of your health and wellbeing needs!
Additionally, as a student at York, you will have the chance to see incredible views in the local surrounding area. From Clifford’s Tower and the Old City Walls to the Shambles and the York Minster. There is no end to what you can do and see in this charming city! One of my personal favorites is to grab a coffee from a local cafe and walk along the River Ouse (when the weather allows!)
Ultimately, what you do and what you see will be up to you. But take it from me, the year goes by fast; you will want to make the most of your time as a Social Media and Management student at York.
