A BIT OF MY STORY
Ever since I have memory, I have been a very passion driven person. Always eager to learn more and discover fun and challenging things to do. I am a Mechanical Engineer from Mexico City who developed my career in the automotive industry for 7 years. At some point, I started questioning my real purpose and feeling eager for a greater challenge. I wanted to serve our society in a more meaningful way.
Fusion energy ticked all the boxes for me. A promising technology that mimics the energy produced by the sun, with the potential to reshape the future of clean energy and meet the world’s growing energy demands, at the cost of being very hard to achieve. This has turned it into one of the most complex technological challenges of this century.
Leaving behind a stable career was daunting. However the sense of purpose and excitement that comes with tackling the fusion challenge has been more rewarding than I could have imagined. I was lucky enough to align this dream with my wife’s, who is also pursuing a new dream here in the UK.
It was definitely a scary move, it felt like jumping into a cliff. However, I have learned so far that this kind of risks are the ones that add real flavour to our life experience.
THE MSC PROGRAM
Fusion is an emerging technology, and in recent years, significant efforts and investments have been directed toward finding a viable solution. This is why the field requires bright minds from all disciplines and we all can have a role in it!
Fusion is no longer just a physics challenge; it has evolved into a multidisciplinary endeavour. It involves solving complex physics and engineering problems, addressing economic and political hurdles, and understanding how to integrate fusion energy into the electrical grid. Beyond the technical aspects, we must also consider how to improve public acceptance. We must ensure that fusion is delivered in a way that promotes both energy and societal justice, making it safe, abundant, and affordable for everyone.
The MSc Fusion Energy program at the University of York is a great program which I would not hesitate to choose again. You learn about Plasma Physics, Computational simulations, diagnostics, data analysis and Fusion Technology. Subjects are quite dense but are very well taught and much support is available. You will find great opportunities to meet people in the field, listen to experienced professors and industry members lectures. You will unlock PhD opportunities and have the chance to develop your dissertation project. This might be at the York Plasma Institute or even with the industry itself! I am currently doing mine with a private company and looking for opportunities to join organizations like UKAEA and Tokamak Energy to continue developing my career.
It is an amazing program. It’s well structured and with a great community vibe in the York Plasma Institute, close to people that are always there to help you.

LIFE IN CAMPUS
I live in campus at Wentworth College, which is great for a PG student. There is definitely a sweet balance between campus life. I’m walking distance from campus amenities and to the beautiful York City centre and well surrounded by nature.
You can find many activities and societies at the university which are great to boost your experience, confidence and relax from the studies. There are many PG events and opportunities to meet other colleagues and do much more beyond studying.
Personally, I have found great groups of friends both from the MSc and from other study programs. I found a beautiful Latin people group which has helped a lot to maintain a link with home-like culture. I can share the experience with others that are going through a similar adventure.

An international Christmas Night at York!
York is a wonderful place to live, with something for everyone. The City Centre is full of charm, offering a rich historical backdrop. It has a diverse mix of cultures, and plenty of cozy cafes where you can enjoy a great coffee while studying. You’ll also find an abundance of pubs and restaurants perfect for grabbing a pint or having a delicious dinner. Remember, life beyond campus is just as important, it will add so much to your overall experience.
JUST TO CLOSE…
If you’re passionate about solving real-world complex challenges and contributing to a sustainable future, then I highly recommend pursuing Fusion Energy. It’s an exciting and meaningful journey.
