Moving from Surat, Gujarat to the UK has been one of the most exciting and life-changing decisions I’ve ever made. My name is Dev Vyas, and I’m currently studying the MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies programme at the University of York.
As a University of York international student, I came here with a clear vision – to explore the intersection of technology and creativity, and to build a career in user experience and human-centred design.
Why I Chose MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies
After completing my B.E in Computer Science and Engineering from Gujarat Technological University in 2024, I knew I wanted to specialise further. During my undergraduate studies, I also explored Animation and Multimedia, which sparked my interest in combining creativity with technology.
While researching options to study in the UK from India, I found that Computer Science at York stood out for its strong focus on human-centred design. What strengthened my decision even further was the reputation of the University of York as a member of the Russell Group, known for its academic excellence and research strength.
The programme is also accredited by the British Computer Society, which gave me additional confidence in its industry relevance. Combined with the university’s strong academic reputation, it became a clear choice for me. The programme offers a balance of theory and practical learning, enabling students to design meaningful, user-friendly experiences rather than simply building systems.
You can explore full course details, modules, and entry requirements on the official MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies programme page.
My Application Journey from India
The application process was smooth and well-supported. I took the Duolingo English Test, and the University of York’s India team guided me throughout – from preparing for my pre-CAS interview to answering all my questions. Receiving a £5,000 scholarship was one of the happiest moments of my journey. Shortly afterwards, I received my CAS and applied for my visa, which was approved in just one day. The university also organised helpful sessions on accommodation and student life, making the entire transition far more manageable.
Arriving in the UK: My First Experience

Arriving in a new country for the first time can feel overwhelming—but the moment I stepped out of Manchester Airport and saw students holding University of York boards, I felt an immediate sense of reassurance.
I moved into Halifax College, and although the first day was emotional—as it was my first time away from my family, the transition quickly became easier. Connecting with other Indian students through the official WhatsApp group helped me settle in, and within a few days, the campus began to feel like home.
Learning Experience: Semester 1
My academic journey began with induction led by Professor Paul Cairns, who is also my personal supervisor. Semester 1 introduced me to key areas of study, and what stood out most was the teaching approach:
- Lectures clearly introduce core concepts
- Practical sessions immediately apply them to real-world scenarios
- Professors actively support students during hands-on work
My favourite module was Interaction Design and Evaluation, where I developed a strong understanding of how to analyse and improve user experiences. Group projects also helped me build collaboration skills and apply research methods in practice.
Hands-On Learning: Real Projects and Research
In Semester 2, the learning became even more practical. One of my favourite modules has been Player Experiences in Digital Games.
For our group project, we analysed Super Mario World (1991). Participants were asked to vocalise their thoughts while playing, allowing us to capture genuine user behaviour. We then created detailed UX reports, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement. This hands-on experience gave me a deeper understanding of UX research and prepared me for my dissertation, where I was delighted to receive my preferred topic.
Life Beyond Lectures: University of York Campus Life

University of York campus life is more than just convenient, it’s an experience that helps you feel at home, even when you’re far away.
Daily life is simple and well-connected. Whether it’s a quick stop at Nisa Local on Campus West or a short walk to Aldi, everything you need is within easy reach. Travelling between Campus East and West is equally straightforward, thanks to the free bus zone.
What truly makes it special are the moments beyond routine:
- Celebrating Diwali with the Hindu Society was incredibly meaningful. Being away from home during such an important festival was difficult, but the sense of community made it feel like a home away from home.
- One of the most unforgettable moments was witnessing my first snowfall, looking out of my Halifax window and seeing the entire campus covered in white felt surreal.
- Visiting York city centre during Christmas and New Year, surrounded by festive lights and a lively atmosphere, gave me a real sense of the UK’s culture and charm.
A Supportive and Welcoming Community
One of the most valuable aspects of my journey has been the people I’ve met. From university staff to fellow students, everyone has been incredibly supportive and welcoming.
The professors at the University of York are approachable and genuinely invested in student success. Their guidance has played a key role in helping me grow both academically and personally.
Final Thoughts
Choosing to study in the UK from India has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The MSc Human-Centred Interactive Technologies programme at the University of York offers an excellent blend of academic rigour, industry relevance, and practical experience.
As I look ahead to my dissertation and future career, I’m excited to continue building on everything I’ve learned so far. For anyone considering a similar journey, York is a place where you can grow, explore, and truly shape your future.
