Congratulations! You’ve made the amazing decision to go to university and experience student life.
Here’s three reasons why the University of York was the right choice for me. Hopefully, they will help you with your decision about choosing a university.
1. Research, teaching and learning
Firstly, I wanted to be at a Russell Group university. For me, a university with a reputation for outstanding research would be the best gateway to a future successful career.
I then narrowed down my options based on the teaching in the course itself. Personally I’ve always been interested in justice so I looked towards degrees that explored this and found a Law degree best suited my interests.
This brings me to the teaching method used on my course, which I argue is the most stimulating method a student could ever learn by:
‘Problem-based learning’ is how we work at York Law School. This encompasses team building to solve a problem. This method has introduced me to people from all walks of life, whose ideas have moulded my understanding of the world around me.
If you value hands-on work experience, this teaching method is perfect for you.
The complexity of the modules has been a bit challenging at times, but lecturer support hours have been really helpful here. Plus, I’ve received really useful careers advice from an amazing Careers and Placement team.
2. Come to an open day
Secondly, another important requirement for me in choosing a university was being in an environment where I could feel at home. Coming from a family of seven, I love surrounding myself with people!
Attending a University of York open day was really great for me. I found out that every college offers pastoral support, which ranges from adults to fellow students. This really helped me feel comfortable.
I can safely say that this pastoral support has been fundamental in ensuring that I have been in a good headspace throughout my time at university.
3. Choosing your university – it’s not just a degree
Thirdly, I really wanted to be at a university that had lots to do. With over 200 clubs and societies, ranging from sports to a hummus appreciation society, I’ve never run out of things to do.
Not only are the number of societies plentiful, but they are also friendly and welcoming. Everyone is encouraged to ‘give it a go’ as you never know what you may like.
Overall, when choosing a university, pick the one you feel the most comfortable with. I can say with pride that I love going to the University of York. I’ve had the best all-round experience whilst being here.
