One of the best things about university is being able to spend time with people who have the same interests as you. I have been a huge fan of Taylor Swift for years. However, it wasn’t until I started at York that I was able to share my enthusiasm about her with like-minded people. This was through joining the SwiftSoc. As its name suggests, it is a society devoted to all things Taylor Swift. But, its meetings are also great social get-togethers. You can relax, enjoy yourself and chat. I’m now the society’s social secretary, which means that I help plan and organise our various activities.
Where it all began…
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t a Taylor Swift fan, but I suppose my obsession really took a grip when I was 15. I was even lucky enough to be able to attend her Reputation concert in London in June 2018. I’ve now managed to get tickets to Lover Fest in July 2020.
What to expect
SwiftSoc has biweekly meetings where we talk about our idol and sit around in one of the many bars on campus drinking (some alcohol, but also a lot of soft drinks). Sometimes we organise quizzes, treasure hunts, murder mysteries, and even a trips to the cat café in York.
Why join SwiftSoc?
You don’t have to be a hard-core fan to be a member of the society. No one judges you on how much/how little you know. For me personally, it’s been a great way to meet some amazing people who I would probably have never come across otherwise. A major part of university life is making friends. The Taylor Swift Soc has certainly helped me make friends!

I thought that such friendly communities can only be found in films. That’s awesome!
Of course, I’m not a fan of Taylor, but I like the idea so much. It’s cool to find like-minded people and be friends with them!
P/S Where is this cat cafe? I realized that I can’t live without a visit there. xD

Hi Charlotte,
The cat cafe is so awesome! It’s on Goodramgate, right in the centre of town: https://thecatswhiskersyork.co.uk/
