A short overview of events and activities you could get involved in if you join Anne Lister College.
After spending first year at home, I decided to live in Anne Lister in my second year. I did this mainly because I didn’t feel like I knew enough people to comfortably go into a private house. I don’t regret it at all. Quickly I learnt that this was the perfect decision for me. Thanks to the college team socialising at Anne Lister is easy! They are committed to putting on amazing activities and events. These events have allowed me to meet new people, gain confidence and make up for some of the experiences I missed in first year. I am so grateful for this as I am typically too nervous to join in with events such as flat parties. These events had the perfect relaxed atmosphere for me to socialise.
My first night
On the first night we were invited to a mixer. We were promised free pizza and a free drink, which was obviously an attractive deal to everybody. When we arrived there were activities such as code breakers on the tables. These allowed us to interact with each other as people filtered in.
At this point there was a petrol shortage, but never fear, the Anne Lister representatives actually drove their own cars to pick up boatloads of pizza from Dominoes for us all! They really did deliver on their promise. There was pizza quite literally everywhere you looked! We were all encouraged to socialise, to talk and to have fun.
It was an amazing event, allowing us to settle into our new accommodation blocks and meet those around us in a peaceful way. Plus, who would turn down the free pizza? On top of all of this, we were all given Anne Lister founding member t-shirts. Who doesn’t love a free t-shirt?
All in all, the atmosphere here was amazing, it was so easy to socialise with the Anne Lister residents. The team at Anne Lister just settled all of the nervous energy in the air and allowed for a great night. We went to bed with full bellies and optimism for the year ahead in Anne Lister. I actually didn’t take any photos of this event. My favourite thing about the Anne Lister events is that they allow you to live in the moment and forget to do things like that.
Weekly social activities
Since this initial night there have been weekly activities at Anne Lister. We are sent a timetable every week with plans for the week ahead. This is great as it ensures that we all know there is something there to do to distract us from the masses of work we have to tackle. My personal favourite is the breakfast mornings!
Once a week there is a breakfast morning where we can head down to the hub and grab some free breakfast. Having this option get some food alongside those living around us is great! We get to socialise and eat with people that aren’t in our flat, and it really sets the groundwork for a great day.
Now, there are two extremely important events in first year. Those are Halloween and Christmas. Anne Lister college has been amazing for both of them! There have been a wide range of events and activities for each occasion. For example, there was the opportunity to carve pumpkins as a flat for halloween, and also a large halloween mixer. For Christmas, there was the opportunity to help decorate the tree or to watch movies in the hub as well as a larger mixer. Anne Lister has catered to every person in the social aspect of the college. I personally prefer the smaller events, simply because they appeal to me more as a person. Whichever events you choose though, you can be sure that you will have fun.
Overall
All in all, I am so glad I chose to live in Anne Lister. The social aspect of the college is a key reason behind that. You’re never alone, and you can never be bored as there is always something there for you to do. I am excited to see what the next term holds!
As a side point, every event I have been to has ended in me forgetting to take photos or use my phone. Maybe an aim for next term should be to document my experiences more!
