Hi, I’m Rhiannon, and I’m studying BA Business and Management here at the University of York. In my blog, I’ll be letting you guys know about my week as a Management student, including what I get up to outside my course, and where I like to go in York city centre.
I’ll also mention my favourite study spaces, such as the amazing spaces available in the Church Lane building. Here you’ll find The Link, which serves Starbucks, as well as hot and cold meals. University isn’t just about your course, but also the opportunities offered alongside, like running for course rep!
Monday
Monday is one of my quieter days. I have a two-hour workshop in the morning, which consists mostly of discussions and activities with other students based on what we are going through on the slides. Workshops and seminars give you a chance to meet people on your course, as you spend a lot of time discussing with them.
This is followed by a two-hour lecture, with a short break in the middle. This is a fairly interactive lecture as the content is mathematical, so we are given the opportunity to answer the questions before going through them. I treat the rest of Monday as my day off, so after, I tend to go back to my room and relax.
Tuesday
Tuesdays are a lot busier. Alongside my two lectures and workshop, I also have a weekly meeting for my college committee. My day starts at 9 and finishes at 5, with enough time to grab lunch and have a break in between. I usually use this time to go back over my notes, using the slides to add any information I missed. As Tuesdays are a busier day, I use the evening to prepare for any seminars I have in the following days.
I prefer to work outside my room, which is the same for many other students, so I go to one of the many study spaces on campus and around in York city centre. On campus, I tend to book a study room in the library, or go to the Church Lane building, where there is a range of study spaces and a Starbucks. If I study in town, I tend to go to Pret, but there are many cafés around – and even a cat café!
Wednesday and Thursday
On both Wednesday and Thursday, I have one seminar in the morning. Both of these are in the Church Lane building, so not only can I use the study spaces but, if needed, I can see my lecturers in their office hours here, and talk to the Student Office.
This Wednesday, I also had a Board of Studies meeting, as I’m the elected course rep. This meeting lasted two hours, and gave me and the other reps the opportunity to raise anything the Management-student cohort had mentioned to us. The rest of the day I spent finishing notes from lectures and seminars, and reading for an upcoming assessment.
Friday and weekends
On Friday, I have a lecture and workshop, and tend to go out into town after. This Friday, I went into Pret to finish some reading, and then met with a friend from my course. After doing some emergency shopping and coming back to my room, I made dinner and then booked a study room. I also came to the library to finish writing this blog on my week as a Management student. Weekends I spend doing readings and going to work. This weekend, I also went out with a few of my flatmates to see Spider-Man!
