Hi, I’m Deb, a third year Biochemistry student here at the University of York. With my graduation quickly coming up, I’ve found myself reflecting on the journey that brought me to this point. Like many students, my university experience had its highs and lows, but one constant has been the impact of my degree. Not only has it shaped my academic and professional development, but also in helping me grow as a person. Studying Biochemistry in the Department of Biology at York has truly been transformative. Below are some of my favourite aspects of the course that made these past three years unforgettable:
Staff Support for Biochemistry
One of the standout features of studying Biochemistry at York is the exceptional support from staff. Ever since my first year, I felt lecturers were approachable and genuinely passionate about their subjects. They are always providing help and advice in every workshop. Moreover, my personal academic supervisor helped me navigate the transition from school to university through regular check-ins. These sessions focused on more than just grades and performance. The Biology Student Services team also reassured us by actively offering diverse support during term time and exam season. This made me feel genuinely cared for and part of the department.
Facilities and Resources
The Department of Biology provides excellent facilities, and having access to such high-quality resources truly enhances my learning. From modern teaching labs to dedicated study spaces and the impressive Technology Facility, I was in awe of what we had access to during research projects along our university experience. Other spaces such as the Creative Lounge made revision and research much more manageable
Opportunities and Experience
There are so many opportunities to get involved beyond lectures. Summer internships, placements, taking part in the Biosciences Society, working as a student ambassador. These are only some of the many of experiences available for students. This laid a strong foundation for an improved skill set which boosted my employability and helped me during job interviews.
Biochemistry Course Content
What kept me engaged over the three years of my Biochemistry course was the variety of the course content. When I joined, my degree was structured in a way that allowed me to build a solid foundation in first year. With separate Biology and Chemistry modules, to more specialized topics in later years. Modules exploring topics in biophysics, cancer therapy and immunology were not only fascinating but also incredibly relevant to current research and real-world applications. The flexibility to choose optional modules helped tailor the degree to my interests, which made the learning process even more enjoyable. The variety of teaching formats, including small group teaching and workshops with smaller cohorts, significantly consolidated my knowledge and allowed me to delve deeper into subjects I was truly enthralled by.
Final thoughts
At the end of my journey at York, I’m beyond grateful for everything I experienced during my undergraduate degree. Through all challenges I have had to overcome, very notably moving from the other side of the globe alone, I know I would not be here if it were not for my degree and the Department of Biology. The support, opportunities and resources I have access to molded me as a person, and have definitely left a mark. I will carry the knowledge I gained, from lectures, labs, internships, seminars, interviews and shifts with me for life – and I couldn’t be prouder to say that these were all as a result of choosing a Biochemistry degree at the University of York.
