- Get your computer, phone or tablet ready to connect to the University wifi. Follow the setup instructions.
- Games consoles, smart speakers and smart TVs can connect to our ‘My Devices’ network. Follow the instructions to register your device.
- Connect to our IT facilities wherever you are, with services including a Virtual Private Network and a Virtual Desktop Service. Follow the set up instructions to set up your device to work off campus. Duo two-factor authentication is required to log in.

- There’s lots of help and support information available on our website – start with our page specifically for new arrivals:
- Your Departmental Computing Officer (DCO). Most departments have a DCO who’ll be able to support you with various aspects of using IT. Find yours:
- Stay secure. Your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity. You need to keep them safe. Never share your password, and if anyone else does know it, you should change your password.
- Learn how to spot scams like phishing emails and get more IT security advice on our website.
- Find out about High Performance Computing facilities to support your research – no matter what your subject area is.
- Install MS Office 365 free of charge so that you can use MS Office on up to five different devices. The subscription remains valid as long as you are a student at the University of York.
- Install other software at discounted rates. As a student at York, you can install a number of other software packages free, or at a discount.
- Check whether you can buy IT equipment more cheaply from our suppliers. There are a number of discounts available when you buy computer equipment for personal use.
- Borrow a laptop for short term use on campus, or take it out on loan for up to a month. This service will be available from Monday 28 September.
