Studying for a PhD – The Inside Story: Online Q & A for prospective PhD students

Date: Tuesday 26 July 2022, 12 – 1pm

Are you interested in studying a PhD and from an underrepresented group*?

The Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE) partners; the Universities of York, Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds and Sheffield Hallam University are running a Q & A webinar on 26 July from 12-1pm where you can meet current PhD students from underrepresented groups.

Find out how University of Leeds PhD students: RagyMercy and Olivia made their way into postgraduate study in Yorkshire, what barriers they faced and how they have overcome them.

Attendees will be able to submit questions for the students in advance or ask them in the session.

For further enquiries into the session contact George Gisborne, Postgraduate Diversity Officer at the University of Leeds on g.gisborne@leeds.ac.uk

*The OFS defines Underrepresented groups as follows:

Groups of students who share the following particular characteristics where data shows gaps in equality of opportunity in relation to access, success or progression:

  • students from areas of low higher education participation, low household income or low socioeconomic status
  • some black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) students
  • mature students
  • disabled students
  • care leavers.

National data indicates that there are additional groups of students with particular equality gaps and support needs that can be addressed in an access and participation plan. These are also included in our definition of underrepresented groups:

  • carers
  • people estranged from their families
  • people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities
  • refugees
  • children from military families.
