Are you interested in human rights issues? Does your doctoral research address human rights challenges? Would you like to meet and share your experiences with a community of human rights researchers?
The Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR) is soliciting proposals from PhD students enrolled in the University of York for participation in an in-person poster workshop on June 28th. The poster workshop will bring together doctoral students working on human rights issues and connect them with each other and members of staff who are also interested in human rights issues.
Participants will receive guidance on effective poster design and presentation in advance of the workshop and feedback on their presentation, poster and research at the workshop. Participants will also be invited to a panel discussion of career paths in the field of human rights research. The formation of a University network of post-graduate human rights researchers will also be discussed at the workshop.
Expressions of interest:
The Centre welcomes expressions of interest from current and recently completed doctoral students at all stages of doctoral research at the University of York. They are particularly keen to encourage participation from all parts of the University where research connects with human rights issues, whether or not this is the primary focus of the research or how its is normally discussed within your discipline. Connections with human rights issues in a range of ways, including the substance of the research, its potential impact, or its methodology.

The Centre is particularly interested in ensuring that persons of all abilities can participate in the event. Directions for addressing accessibility in poster design will be circulated to participants; they are happy to discuss any accommodation needed by any participant in the workshop.
Details of event:
The poster workshop will take place on June 28th in YH/001b (the Research Centre for the Social Sciences Building)
There will be a closed networking and careers in human rights research session for all participants from 1 pm to 2 pm. This will be followed by a public presentation of the posters from 2.30 pm to 4 pm. Posters will be introduced by way of a 3 minute talk from each researcher at the start of the public presentation. The event will be open to the public. The Centre hope to be joined at the workshop by York academics working on human rights, human rights defenders, and students of all backgrounds.
The posters will be reviewed and discussed with the researcher by an academic panel. Book prizes for the top posters and presentations will be presented at the end of the event; awards will include a ‘people’s choice’ award based on the opinions of audience members. Refreshments will be provided at the workshop.
An informal online Zoom meeting will be held on June 15th at 2 pm for participants to brief them on any requirements of the presentation and poster, direct them to examples and guidelines, and to answer any questions.
