I’m lucky enough to be one of the students studying Computer Science at York. In this blog post, I’m going to tell you about my top 3 things to look forward to about Computer Science at York!
The picturesque Campus East
Computer Science sits in the spacious Campus East, only a short bus commute or walk from the lively Campus West. I always lose my breath momentarily in awe of the frosty grass lawns and scenic lakes while walking to my lectures in the morning. You’ll be sure to spot some of the numerous wildlife that have made this campus their home. You’ll find rabbits, geese, ducks, herons and all sorts of other birdlife!
Campus East houses many state-of-the-art facilities enhancing your university experience! Computer Science lectures are in the Law and Management Building, the Ron Cooke Hub and the Piazza. Each has plenty of study spaces where you can work between lectures and practicals. If you’re feeling peckish, there are plenty of places to eat. The Piazza even has a dining hall where East Campus students have their weekly meals!
The Computer Science Building
Also located on the Campus East is the Computer Science Building. It has numerous seminar rooms, offices for lecturers/researchers, as well as high-spec labs for your software and hardware modules. The software labs are open 24/7 which is perfect for when you need some late night Java practice and just can’t focus in your room. The computers are top-spec, with all of the programs you could ever need already installed. The hardware labs are just as decked out, with oscilloscopes and circuit boards at your fingertips.
Also situated in the Computer Science Building is The Pod, which is where students meet to do group work, study independently, or just catch up with friends! During Freshers Week, Computer Science holds welcome events in the Pod offering free pizza (and sometimes cake). It’s a great opportunity to meet your peers before your scheduled classes begin in the second week.
The wonderful people you’ll meet
Starting university is a daunting experience – being in a new place surrounded with new people. But the people of Computer Science can be some of the most fun, kindest people you’ll meet, and can make some of the best friends. Computer Science events during Campump are a great opportunity to meet some of your peers and lecturers. You will likely also meet your supervisor shortly after that, who can be a great point of contact, ensuring you settle in well and find the course content manageable. Throughout the year you’ll also meet other undergrads, graduate students, and researchers all sharing your enthusiasm for computer science. I’ve met so many wonderful people at university, from my coursemates to our lecturers.
In conclusion, choosing to study Computer Science at York was one of the best decisions I made. It’s a wonderful place to live, and the people here make it so much more enjoyable. It’s tough just giving three reasons because every day that I study here I find another reason why I love it so much. I hope you get the chance of experiencing a degree at York too. I hope to see you here next year!
