Coming soon: a new version of the web CMS

It’s been a few years since we’ve had an upgrade to our web content management system (CMS), but we’re pleased to announce that we’re going to be moving to a new version soon.

We’ve still got some final testing to do before we confirm the date, but we’re aiming for the week of 9 December, after term finishes (and just in time for Christmas).

What’s changed?

Although there are quite big changes to how the CMS looks, the fundamentals of creating, editing and publishing content work in the same way as before, so there isn’t a whole new system to learn.

There will be some great improvements though, including:

  • A much more modern interface
  • Lots of improvements when creating and editing content
  • An improved media library
Improvements include being able to see the content types used in a section at a glance, and reordering content items by dragging and dropping
In the media library, more information is shown up-front now, making it easier to find what you’re looking for

We’ll be putting together documentation that highlights where anything has changed. For example, you’ll find that some of the menus are in a slightly different place now, and there are a couple of minor terminology changes.

What happens during the upgrade?

The upgrade is planned to take place in the week commencing 9 December. We’ll announce the exact date closer to the time. We’re anticipating it will take two days, during which the CMS will not be available for users to log into.

Live web pages will not be affected when we upgrade the system. Once the upgrade is complete, publishing will resume as normal.

Come to a briefing session to find out more

Ahead of the upgrade, we’re running briefing sessions where you can see the new system in action and talk to us in person.

Members of the Marketing Support and Digital teams will be available to answer any questions.

We’ll be running two sessions (both will cover the same content, so you only need to come to one of them):

  • 10am on Wednesday 4 December: Bowland Auditorium, Berrick Saul Building
  • 10am on Thursday 5 December: Lakehouse, Ron Cooke Hub
