Getting ready for university can be stressful. Today, I’m hoping to take your mind off this by telling you about all the exciting things to expect when studying Engineering at York! Let’s begin…
Facilities
Expect high-standard facilities! We have many dedicated labs and computer rooms. There are plentiful study facilities with different setups to suit everyone. There is also the university-wide library.
Most facilities (except specialised labs) have 24-hour student card access! I have taken advantage of that in the past, especially before exams and deadlines.
Staff
In my experience, the staff have been nothing but friendly, helpful, and accommodating!
There is always someone out there to assist you regardless of your query. Be it academic, career-related or special interest – talk about how you are feeling and reach out!
I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that you are coming to a learning environment which always strives to improve. I spent 2 years as being Course Rep, where I represented my cohort and discussed our issues regularly in student-staff committees. I found that staff are receptive to student feedback and makes amends where necessary.
Campus
In my opinion, the campus is one of the best things about the university.
The greenery and waterfowl create a lovely, calm atmosphere. I find it to be very good for those with busy student lives.
I immediately feel better when I see so many wild animals around – rabbits, birds, and hedgehogs.
Don’t drop your guard, because having a walk on campus is also an adventure. You do not know what feisty goose you’re going to encounter next! Feeding healthy foods like grains is ok, so always have some seeds at hand, as that feisty goose is hungry!
City of York
I’ve lived in many places around the world, but York is by far my favourite, especially for student life.
York is accessible without a car as city bus links are good. But if you don’t mind a longer walk, everything is pretty much within walking distance.
If you like tasty, varied food and a nice drink, then York is for you. You can always visit a new bar, café, restaurant or street-food counter as there are so many!
The city centre is wonderful. Just having a walk around is nice enough, as there’s a lot of sightseeing to do. There are many museums, independent shops, and local markets to visit. There are also other activities such as the Cat trail, riverside walks, boat tours, ghost tours and the Hidden Pathways trail. I’ve been here for 4 years and I still haven’t managed to do it all!
