Hi I’m Rebecca (she/her), a third-year midwifery student at the University of York. After this length of studying (I’m nearly qualified), I’d say I’m pretty qualified to give you the inside scoop on student life here at the University of York!
The start of My journey
I began the midwifery course in September 2022 and, like many other first years, I lived in student halls- David Kato to be exact. I still have a photo of me moving in, like an excited fresher which is what you will be soon! That feels like a longgg time ago now!
That’s my fresher self moving in –>
Theory vs. Placement Blocks
At the University of York, midwifery is structured into theory blocks and placement blocks
- Theory blocks take place at the University (mostly west campus), usually running Monday to Friday. This is when you learn the core module content without the pressure of also being on placement. That first theory block is a great opportunity to settle in, bond with your cohort, and adjust to student life. More importantly, it’s a great time to enjoy freshers events!
- Clinical simulation is used during the theory blocks to practice your clinical skills, e.g. venipuncture (blood taking) before you do it in placement!
- Placement blocks come later, giving you hands-on experience in different settings such as community, antenatal, labour and postnatal wards. This is the time to use all that theory you have learned and put it into real-life practice. You’ve got this!
During the placement blocks, you will work under the supervision of a registered midwife to guide you through the practical skills you will need to become a registered midwife!
Worried about accommodation for second year?
In the first year, accommodation is simple—just a few clicks, some preferences, and you’re in halls. But sorting out housing for the second year? It can feel a bit more complicated. Don’t worry, though—it’s not as stressful as it seems!
There are plenty of student letting agencies in York that make the process much easier (they certainly did for me!). The key is finding the right balance—don’t leave it too late to start looking (the early bird gets the worm!), but at the same time, don’t feel pressured to rush into it the moment you arrive. Take some time to settle in and get to know people first.
Who knows? You might end up living with your fellow student midwives in second year!
Perks of studying at York
One big advantage of being a midwifery student at York? We get more holidays compared to other universities! If that doesn’t spark your interest, I’m not sure what will.
You won’t have assessments during your placement time due to the theory and placement split. This makes it much easier just to focus on placement and not worry about the uni stuff!
Not all Universities do this so it’s a biggg plus for York.
Studying midwifery is an exciting journey and York provides you with that work life balance and support that you need! If you’re considering it- go for it!
I hope this was helpful and I wish you the best of luck on your journey to midwifery at York.
